The Berkman Luncheon Series presents Hal Roberts in a discussion entitled "Watching Google AdWords: The Mysterious Mechanization of Meaning in the Google Brain." Hal Roberts conducts media and surveillance related research at the Berkman Center.

Mr. Roberts will discuss how Google's AdWords system (which displays ads next to about 1/4 of all web traffic) uses personal search histories to target the ads. He will examine how this may amount to a form of "gray surveillance" and the possible impacts.

The Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University is located in Cambridge, MA. The Berkman Center is celebrating its 10th year of exploring cyberspace, sharing in its study, and pioneering its development.
