The X-Prize Foundation's Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge 2008 features 9 teams with rocket-powered vehicles competing for $2 million in NASA Centennial Challenge prize money. The challenge is held in Las Cruces International Airport in New Mexico. The webcast also features a chatroom for viewers.
The Lunar Lander Challenge was created to spur development of commercial technology to support new Lunar Landers that could transport payloads or humans between the lunar surface and lunar orbit.
There are two levels in the competition:
Level 1 - rocket must take off from a designated point, rocket up to a 150 foot altitude, hover for 90 seconds, and land precisely 150 feet away - then the process must be repeated in reverse within two and a half hours
Level 2 - in addition to level 1 requirements, the rocket must hover for an additional 90 seconds and land on a simulated lunar surface with craters and boulders
