The Berkman Luncheon Series presents David "Oso" Sasaki, Director of Rising Voices and Director of Outreach for Global Voices Online. The Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University is located in Cambridge, MA. The Berkman Center is celebrating its 10th year of exploring cyberspace, sharing in its study, and pioneering its development.

David is concerned that with the rise of blogs and other forms of participatory media, that new global voices often come from a small demographic: highly educated, urban, and upper-middle class citizens. Rising Voices is an initiative of Global Voices Online. Rising Voices is a global citizen media outreach organization that provides micro-funding and training in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe to help communities that have little or no online voice.

David will discuss the lessons he has learned from training under-represented populations on how they can utilize new media tools to participate in the global conversation. Previously, David worked as Global Voices’ Latin America Regional Editor, as a freelance web developer and as an English instructor in Mexico. David spends substantial time in Latin America. He writes frequently for Rising Voices, Idea Lab, and his own blog.
