The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History hosts a lecture in its Abraham Lincoln Lecture Series entitled "Lincoln, the Smithsonian, and Science." During his presidency, Lincoln looked to the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, Joseph Henry, for scientific advice. The panel will discuss Lincoln's views on government-supported scientific study and his relationship with the Smithsonian.

Panelists are:

- (moderator) Richard Kurin - Smithsonian Under Secretary for History, Art, and Culture

- Marc Rothenberg - editor of The Joseph Henry Papers Project at the Smithsonian Archives

- Thomas B. Allen and Roger MacBride Allen - authors of "Mr. Lincoln's High Tech War: How the North Used the Telegraph, Railroads, Surveillance Balloons, Iron-Clads, High-Powered Weapons, and More to Win the Civil War"

- John P. Holdren - Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy and President Obama’s science advisor
